RECOGNITION OF
MICHIGAN LAND SURVEYORS OF THE PAST
The following Resolution is being recommended by the Public Relations Committee of MSPS for consideration by its Board of Directors.
WHEREAS: Most of the land surveys in Michigan today are based on work accomplished under very trying conditions by local land surveyors of the past 200 years, and
WHEREAS: Recognition of these men and women would give present day land surveyors a closer personal feeling to their predecessors and show them reason for greater pride in their selected profession, and
WHEREAS: This recognition would bring local and statewide attention to the land surveying profession and particularly the Michigan Society of Professional Surveyors and its local chapters through the news media.
NOW THEREFORE: We of the Public Relations Committee of the Michigan Society of Professional Surveyors propose to the Board of Directors of MSPS that these many men and women be formally and individually recognized by the Michigan Society of Professional Surveyors through a selective process.
It is further recommended that the following minimum standards be used as a basis for selections:
- The Land Surveyor selected as "Michigan Land Surveyor of the Past"
- Must be fully retired from land surveying not less than two years or be deceased not less than two years.
- Must have resided within the state of Michigan no less than five years, except prior to 1900.
- Must have been Registered Land Surveyor if active since 1937.
- Must have been personally responsible for extensive survey control and records or significant land surveying projects within the State of Michigan.
- The following nominating and acceptance for recognition rules are suggested.
- Each MSPS Chapter can select one land surveyor annually and supply historical and biographical facts about each surveyor to a statewide committee before September 1st of each year.
- The land surveyor selected shall then be formally recognized at the next MSPS Annual Meeting Banquet and if able shall be a guest at the banquet.
- Appropriate individual plaques honoring each "Michigan Land Surveyor of the Past" shall be delivered by the president of the sponsoring chapter to a public office for permanent display, County Commissioners, County Engineer, County Historical Society, County Library, etc.
- Appropriate notice shall be provided for newspaper announcements of the selected candidate. Along with their name will be an article describing the Land Surveyor’s achievements. Each MSPS Chapter will be encouraged to publicize this announcement in their area.
- Amendments to the adopted proposal shall be by recommendation of the statewide selection committee and ratified by the MSPS Board of Directors.
- It is recommended that the statewide selection committee consist of the State President Elect and the president-elect or representative Office from each chapter. An annual meeting in September by this committee would give them an opportunity to become acquainted with and review the submitted candidates prior to selecting one candidate prior to January 1st preceding the next annual meeting.
- A permanent record will be kept at the MSPS central office.
- The Public Relations Committee shall develop a standard format requiring certain minimum data including, but not limited, to name dates, photos (if possible), area of specialty or achievement, etc.
- The Public Relations Committee shall design a suitable standard plaque to be
supplied to local chapters.
- The Selection Committee shall select one (1) land surveyor out of those being considered to be honored as the MSPS Statewide "Michigan Land Surveyor of the Past" for that particular year.
- Letter to be sent to closest relative or other appropriate person requesting their presence at the Annual Meeting announcement, if the candidate selected is deceased or unable to attend.
